Various Artists “Auld Lang Syne” - CUL117D

Now re-released by Greentrax as part of their expanding empire, this blends the talents of The Cast, Alasdair Fraser, Paul Machlis, Tony McManus, Chantan, Bachue and Skyedance, so there’s no doubting that the music is going to be of impeccable class. And it is, with a variety of material that not only reflects the styles of the artists, but also gives plenty of variation in the music that is being interpreted.

All of the artists draw on the past, as the title implies, but also, as in Alasdair Fraser’s Theme for Scotland, project forward.  And not only by the titles of works, but by innovative interpretation of the music, by sensitive yet bold arrangements and by excellent technical ability.

With a good balance between songs and tunes, and between faster and slower-paced material, the overall effect is very pleasing and very satisfying.
