The sub-title, "New Celtic music from Green Linnet", would normally have me pulling faces. But, from Kevin Burke (3 times) to Wolfstone via June Tabor, Liz Carroll, Hayes and Cahill, and others, there's new and old music from various Celts, and something for everybody. So that's all right then. Kevin Burke's version of Tommy Potts' 'The Butterfly' (surely the most often played slip jig nowadays?) sounds more like Potts than Burke himself, and none the worse for that. Reeltime's 'The Trucks of Bohermore' is almost a Galway in-joke that had me laughing at the sheer cheek of it. There's a great closing track; 'Farewell to Ireland/The Foxhunter's Reel' from Celtic Fiddle Festival. This is a great driving set from Burke, Cunningham, and Lemaitre; if it doesn't set you "Hooching" maybe you should see a doctor. I'm not too happy about Andy M Stewart's 'Rambling Irishman'. Good enough, but he has enough songs with his own stamp on them; to include this on a compilation doesn't do him justice. Kila's 'Tine Lasta' left me cold; maybe I don't understand what they're doing, but I just didn't like it at all. Personal taste, I suppose. Still and all, another fine example from Green Linnet's catalogue. Mick Furey |
