Gold Badge for Doctor Sunshine

Back in September EFDSS announced the recipients of 2017’s Gold Badge awards (given for unique or outstanding contributions to folk music, dance or song, or distinguished service to EFDSS). This year, they are being awarded to Johnny Adams, Nicolas Broadbridge, The Wilson Family and Dave and Maggie Hunt.

Dave Hunt is the founder of Sunshine Arts, an organisation specialising in working in schools, at festivals and in the community, promoting the traditional arts to children. As Doctor Sunshine, he has encouraged thousands of children to get more involved with the tradition – he began in 1975 and has been active at festivals every year since. Maggie has also been an integral part of the Sunshine Arts team, encouraging young people in the development of their performance skills in particular.

Dave has decided that the time has come to retire, so this year’s festival at Bromyard was the last outing for Dr Sunshine and Sunshine Arts. And Dave’s last calling gig is with the Old Swan Band at Cecil Sharp House on the 17th November. He has been their resident caller for 40 years, and he has worked with well over 200 different bands since starting in 1974.

It is good to see Dave and Maggie being awarded the Gold Badges this year – “it’s a real honour,” Dave says. Congratulations to them, and to all the other recipients.
