Folk star turns down big USA date for St Ives Festival

West Country folk star Seth Lakeman has turned down the chance to appear with legendary Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant at a big American festival in order to play in front of 466 people at St Ives Guildhall in Cornwall.

Devon's Seth, who has spent most of this year touring the world with Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters, recently received the call to begin the next leg of their travels at the LouFest Music Festival at Central Field in Forest Park, St Louis, Missouri, on Saturday (Sept 8). But, having already been booked to headline the opening night of the 2018 St Ives September Festival, he told Plant's tour management: "I've promised to play at the St Ives Festival and I can't let them down."

So, with the blessing of rock superstar Plant, Lakeman will appear at St Ives before dashing to catch a plane to the States in time to join the second date on the tour at the Arvest Bank Theatre in Kansas City two days later.

The St Ives gig, which has already sold out, will be Lakeman's last UK appearance for some time as he is joining Plant for ten American dates, finishing at the Moody Theatre in Austin, Texas, on September 29.

"We are hugely grateful to Seth Lakeman for honouring his commitment to our Festival and to his fans in Cornwall," said Mary English, chairman of the annual 15-day St Ives September Festival of music and arts which runs until September 22 with more than 300 events.

Cornish shanty singers Fisherman's Friends have also sold out The Guildhall for next Monday (Sept 10).

A full house is also expected for Devon's Steve Knightley, of Show of Hands, with his one-man show Songs and Stories on Wednesday, September 19, with the Ronnie Scotts All Stars, from the famous London jazz club, closing in on a sixth successive sold-out St Ives Festival year when they appear for two nights at The Western Hotel on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 18 and 19.
