‘Tis the Season… for awards

As we go to print with Issue 131, we are in the thick of award season. Nominations, shortlists, ceremonies, voting campaigns – they are all coming thick and fast...

The latest recipients of EFDSS’s gold badge awards were announced in September and this year the recipients, awarded for their contributions to folk music, dance or song, were Chris Coe, John Graham, Kate Rusby and Mike Norris.

Also in September, the 12 semi-finalists for the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Award were announced. The winner will be decided on 2 February at the City Halls in Glasgow as part of Celtic Connections.

Earlier in the year the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame ‘Services to Community’ inductees were announced, and Joyce Hodge, Joan Moran, Meg Findlay, Maggie Macrae and William Cook were honoured with an inclusion.

In October the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards were held in Manchester, and the RTE Radio 1 Folk Awards were held in Dublin, both with an impressive list of winners. And as I write, the voting has opened for the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards, for which the finals will be held in Aberdeen on 7 December.

Congratulations to all who have been recognised, and also to all those who weren’t but who help to keep our traditions alive in many different ways.
