BEPPE GAMBETTA & TONY MCMANUS - Round Trip

BEPPE GAMBETTA & TONY MCMANUS - Round Trip
Borealis BCD238

This is easy to review – take two of the world’s finest guitarists, stick them in the studio and let them help one another to play some tunes that they love.

For those of you who don’t know, Tony McManus is a (sadly now ex-pat) Scottish guitar player who combines technical genius (the man can play a tremolo with his thumb, for heaven’s sake) with a strong understanding of the musical traditions of the British Isles and a love of stretching his wings.

Beppe Gambetta is approximately the same thing, but coming from Genoa – not Paisley (and I don’t know if he can play a tremolo with his thumb, though it wouldn’t surprise me).

Together, they are blindingly brilliant on tunes by Gordon Duncan, the late lamented bagpipe genius, and Peter Ostroushko, as well as traditional tunes from all over the Celtic tradition - from Planxty favourite, Out On The Ocean, to the Macedonian dance, Moustambeiko.

Not much more to say, really – just two of the world’s finest guitarists clearly having a ball. What’s not to like?
