A band who are at the top of their field, this CD brings to completion The Glencraig Scottish Dance Band’s four CD series exploring the different aspects of Scottish dance. This recording focuses on Old Time Dances, while the previous ones (all also on Greentrax) cover ceilidh dancing, Scottish country dances and reeling. Each type of dance has different musical requirements, and on these CDs, the GDB have shown that they are more than up to the job of covering them all.
Their leader and musical arranger, the irrepressible Nicol McLaren, has expertly set the tunes to the various dances, and along with some of the old favourite tunes are one or two surprises – pleasing dancer and listener alike. There are full dance instructions in the sleeve notes for those that are so inclined, and also detailed histories of the dances.
An excellent end to a well put together in-depth series that is a must for any lover of Scottish dance music.
