This accomplished duo that are no strangers to folk club and festival audiences alike here deliver their ninth album in 12 years. This is a perfect showcase for their current material. Dave Wilson’s songs deal with many difficult issues head on, from emigration and homelessness via rocky relationships and first love, to the customary song about his father (every songwriter eventually is driven to write one). Kip Winter’s delicate voice is a perfect harmonic match for her partner, and together they deliver these songs with great aplomb. The Freo Doctor could have been a Lowell George song as it has the same Little Feat vibe, and Ghost is reminiscent of Steve Knightley at his most socially observant.
Mostly comprising just two voices and one or two acoustic instruments, these are personal statements that would be abused by the addition of multiple layers. These are songs presented exactly as they are delivered in a club context. The title track, in particular, is an ideal way to kick off the album, while Tried And Tested is a modern blues that gives Kip Winter a perfect opportunity to showcase her potential for raunchy delivery. St. Peter’s Gate is a heart-wrenching song about loneliness that is more than touching.
This is a perfect calling card for their new adventure in support of Fairport Convention on their spring tour; a sublime collection of tracks to kick off the new year in style. Well balanced, strong songs delivered with care, and by people who are passionate about their craft. Lovely.
