Merger for Stirrings and Tykes’ News

Stirrings was one of the UKs regional magazines, focussing on folk and acoustic music in South Yorkshire, since 1975. Its most recent editor, Raymond Greenoaken, decided to retire after around 20 years at the helm and, as no-one was found to continue the editorship, it looked like the end of the road for the magazine after an impressive 181 issues. But happily, the Tykes’ News team who produce West Yorkshire’s quarterly folk magazine stepped up to the plate.

As a result, the next issue – Spring – will be a new magazine, Tykes’ Stirrings, which merges the two and will now cover the entire county of Yorkshire on a quarterly basis. Like Stirrings, the magazine will be in full colour and the regular features of both magazines will continue. It is hoped to maintain costs for both subscribers and advertisers at their current level.

Nigel Schofield takes over editorship of the new magazine, which can be contacted at, or by post (108 Bingley Road, Saltaire, Shipley, BD8 4DP). Jim Ellison and the Tykes’ production team, as well as the team of contributors and reviewers for both magazines, remain in place.

The merger means that for the first time, there is a dedicated magazine providing information, articles, gig guides and news for the whole of Yorkshire.
