PETE COE "In Paper Houses" Backshift Music BASH CD53

Pete definitely deserved his place on the cover of the last issue of TLT, for he is surely the oft alluded to but seldom realised "One Man Folk Festival". In Paper Houses confirms this status (as if confirmation were necessary) with its mix of mainly traditional material with the best of new-old song writing subjected to top of the range singing and playing from Pete and his compadres. Although six tracks are solo (and magnificent), further magnificence is supplied by various supporters, notably Chris Coe and Johnny Adams (making up The Ryburn 3), The Ryburn 3 Step Chorus (too numerous to mention individually, but a great big noise) and Backshift Brass (ditto).

As the spearhead of the whole Ryburn revolution, Pete Coe deserves not only our admiration, but also our support. The Folk Utopia they have created embraces the whole community in social and ritual dance, celebrates singing and playing in club and festival and is forever evolving and involving. Maybe we aren't all blessed with his vision, energy or enthusiasm, but at least we can buy this damn fine CD.
