HUGH LUPTON, NICK HENNESSEY, JOHN DIPPER, JAMES PATTERSON - Barbed Wire For Kisses |
||||
Here's another fine issue dedicated to the First World War. Using material found in the Lincolnshire County Archive, a narrative has been constructed which uses the lives of a village to mirror what was happening elsewhere. The storytellers, Nick Hennessey and Hugh Lupton have done a fine job, creating a spellbinding flow which is underpinned by the jinking violin of John Dipper and a few songs from the wonderful James Patterson. I particularly like the way the musicians have adapted some "classical" pieces, such as Gerald Finzi's setting of Thomas Hardy's poem In The Time Of The Breaking Of Nations - a beautiful piece of work - I'd love to hear them do more of this sort of repertoire. As might be expected, there is a lot of reading - it sounds like a high-quality radio piece. If you go and see it performed this will make a lovely memento and enable you to relive the performance - it's a shame it wasn't made as a DVD. As it stands, this is an impressive piece of work, but I'm not sure how often I would want to revisit it. www.barbedwireforkisses.co.uk Paul Burgess |
