TIM EDEY - How Do You Know? |
||||
Tim Edey is a multifarious talent - singer, guitarist, accordion player, songwriter, accompanist and producer. He is prolific, whether recording and working in duos with Brendan Power and Seamus Begley, or on his own trio and solo releases. Now comes the latest solo effort, How Do You Know? - again it’s a conglomeration of tunes and songs, both traditional and otherwise. The guest list includes Dermot Byrne, Charlie McKerron, Triona Marshall, Gordon Gunn, Steve Cooney and more. It’s a musical map, tracing everything from Irish flavoured tunes, classic Scottish airs and songs that incorporate everything from travelogues and Taoist reflections to Swing Jazz style idioms. The tune sets include some classic Scottish airs, Hector The Hero and The Dean Brig Of Edinburgh, and the Box N Fiddle Set, a riveting trio of reels with Dermot Byrne and Steve Cooney along for the ride. The power and bang of this opening gambit contrasts well with the laid-back cadences of The Dean Brig Of Edinburgh where Edey’s classical guitar and Steve Cooney’s fretless bass join harmoniously. Vocally, the songs veer between folk and jazz styles. Taoist Tale (which supplies the album title) by lesser known American singer songwriter Tucker Zimmerman and Three Miles From Annascaul provide some excellent traditional balladry. The Ry Cooder-esque You Give Me Your Love and Elevator Blues exhibit country blues and swing jazz tendencies, and Down Where The River Flows is a nicely laid back reflective ballad. How Do You Know? displays Tim Edey’s many musical talents in great shape. www.timedey.co.uk John O’Regan
