I was lucky to review some of the earlier releases by the Scottish School of Excellence in Traditional Music for the Welsh magazine, Taplas, but it has been some time since I have laid my hands on one so it has been a delight to listen to The Right Path.

It’s a two disc collection: the Pre-Christmas disc shows the formation of the students’ work and the Post-Christmas disc the finished work. The selection of material is broad, encompassing the core of the tradition, some contemporary pieces and several composed by students, and features a wide variety of traditional and contemporary Gaelic and Scots song, tunes, solo and ensemble. It features every instrument used in traditional Scottish music.

This is as good a presentation as you could find of all that is right about traditional Scottish musical education today, not just at the Centre but in all the different components that provide the bedrock for this enterprise. It also happens to be great to listen to. I find myself inspired by the standard of musicianship. Would that we had a centre like this in Wales.

There is so much stimulating stuff here that I’m not going to single out individual tracks and instead urge you to support the school and get a copy.
