The subheading on this CD is "A defining collection of English folk song". Big words and for the most part backed up by the quality of who and what is on offer. A good selection of traditional songs as with, "Polly on the Shore", "Young Edwin in the Lowlands", " Byker Hill", " Van Diemen's Land", " The Lofty Tall Ship" and "Reynardine". With an impressive line up of performers, including, Louis Killen, Anne Briggs, The Watersons, Pop Maynard, Nick Jones, John Tams and Sam Larner, proving equal to the task. A very mixed and varied playlist of nineteen tracks, each with something that should draw you back for another listen. The older singers are, however, presented at something of a disadvantage being directly compared to the more recent products of recording technology. Some listeners may find this gradient a touch too step for comfort. Peter Fairbairn |
