Chouchen are based in Lancaster. The CD notes say "we play traditional music from several European countries for concerts and dance festivals". I say "Why?"

The band are more than musically competent and their members variously have degrees in popular music, ethnomusicology, have been classically trained since an early age, are studying instrument making, teaching music and so on. They romp through the dozen tracks faultlessly. and yet and yet. I found it cold and strangely uninvolving, a bit akin to listening to a compilation of competition test pieces. S
