MUCKLE SANGS: with Sheena Wellington, Heather Heywood, Bob Blair and Adam McNaughtan

In the early to mid 1990s, there were various concerts billed as Muckle Sangs Concerts. Sometimes these were stand alone events, other were part of festivals.

The format was typically four or five singers, on-stage together in a round robin format, with singers choosing their own songs - often reacting to what the previous singer had sung. In this recording you can hear a bit of the interaction with the audiences, and among the singers themselves.

Nic Jones @ Kilmarnock Folk Club, 1978

Nic Jones, performing at Kilmarnock Folk Club. This is a (currently unedited and unrestored) audio recording made at Kilmarnock Folk Club. Both halves of Nic's performance that night are combined into this one recording.

This recording is part of The Living Tradition Archive and is presented here for your enjoyment and as part of the process of documenting and indexing this archive. Feedback is welcome.

Tony Rose @ Kilmarnock Folk Club (1975)

Tony Rose, performing at Kilmarnock Folk Club in 1975 (possibly a little later - we are checking). This is a (currently unedited and unrestored) audio recording made at Kilmarnock Folk Club. Both halves of Tony's performance that night are combined into this one recording.  Changed days now, but in those days, and for this informal recording, people had to consider preserving battery power and trying to fit things into typically a C90 cassette.

Heather Heywood & Bob Blair @ OldSongs Festival Pete Heywood Sat, 01/03/2026 - 22:59
Scots Song Workshop by Heather Heywood and Bob Blair, from The Dutch Barn, OldSongs Festival, New York State. This was billed as a Workshop, but was in effect a relaxed afternoon informal concert presentation in the famous Dutch Barn venue at the OldSongs Festival.
Waterson Carthy @ Girvan Folk Festival 1992 Pete Heywood Thu, 09/10/2020 - 18:01

A short spot by Waterson:Carthy from an Evening Concert at Girvan Folk Festival in 1992. They closed the first half of the concert. Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick were also guests that year. This was quite an early outing for Norma, Martin and Eliza as Waterson:Carthy. It might have been their first festival appearance. (I'll need to check.)

This recording is part of The Living Tradition Archive and is presented here for your enjoyment and as part of the process of documenting and indexing this archive. Feedback is welcome.

The Legacy of Ewan MacColl Pete Heywood Thu, 09/10/2020 - 17:39
A presentation by Sandra Kerr and Bob Blair @ Girvan Folk Festival, 2019.  Sandra and Bob were both in The Critics Group with Ewan. This 'workshop', although lasting well over an hour, barely scratched the surface of what they both consider to be Ewan's immense contribution to the folk revival. It was recorded very simply, for archival purposes, but we present it here for you to enjoy.
